laptop won't show new wifi network

My older laptop is not showing my new wifi network.  It will show my neighbors.  It will connect when connected by ethernet cable to the router.  I checked the wifi router and it says it is updated.   Suggestions>

Some older wireless cards may have trouble connecting to newer routers. You cam try updating the drivers but if that don’t work you can pick up a wireless USB adapter.

Just want to say THANK YOU!  I ordered  a wireless adapter, it arrived today and I was able to connect my old but perfectly fine laptop to my new wireless network.  Saved me money by not having to buy a new laptop.  THANK YOU!!!
