my work laptop

I am trying to connect my work laptop to my home dsl i have all the adress and port numbers it is just telling me server not available however my coworkers have been able to get thru ?? Even when they are talking me thru the steps any ideas what i am doing wrong??

What modem/router are you currently using? How are you trying to connect the work laptop to the network?

Well i was told just to plug the modem from my pc to laptop and that was a ll i needed is this wrong??

That would depend on a few things. Do you currently have any routers in your home, and what modem do you have? Does your modem have an Internet light that is green or would that light be out at all times even when the Internet is working?
