I have a Westell 327 modem that must now be re-booted every time I want to connect a device wirelessly.
The speeds are also variable during the day, sometimes ok, sometimes dismal. We just had a 24 hour "test" and the follow up call said all is well NOW. However, no change is noted.

I believe this is level 1.
We have an old (1970's) NID but in the past there has been no difference in speeds when I direct wire at the box.
I downloaded InSSIDer and found that my device is on channel 6 with -35 to -45 dB. Another (same vendor) device in the neighborhood is also on channel 6, with -93 dB.
I don't know why my radio is changing power level (10dB) over the space of 5 minutes, since my laptop is less than 10 feet from the modem.
I will check again in the morning, and then change channels.
My devices connected wirelessly are a dell laptop, ipod, wii. Two other computers are wire connected.
Change the wireless channel of your router to 1.
