verizon pushes out firmware updates when needed.
if you own your own router like Asus or Netgear then you get firmware updates from the manufacturer of the router.

On the routers (at least the actiontec ones) you can go to advanced options and ask it to check for updates
For the STB's for various models there are special sequences to force the STB to redownload (or download for the first time) the latest update available in your area.
For both routers and various STB, I had cases where for some reason the update wasn't downloading long after they were available.
I had read at DSL Reports that even if a consumer were to try and update firmware on Actiontec or Quantum routers it many times does not take, or takes and reverts back.

so it’s iffy at best. I use my own router as I used my own modems with cable. It is easier getting updates direct from the manufacturers.
