I have vzaccess internet with a 5GB monthly limit. I would like to get a web-cam and use skype occasionally, but I don't know if it would run me into overages on my usage. I normally use about 3500MB each month for all my regular browsing. I read where Skype uses about 70KB per second, but that info isn't very useful. I just want to hear from other people that use vzaccess if Skype takes up very much usage...if it's much like just looking at web-pages.
According to some Googling, it seems Skype uses roughly 200kbps of bandwidth for video calling, though I would imagine these days it uses more along the lines of 450kbps while in a two-way video call. That adds up to roughly 57KB/s of data. Having said that, it'll add up every minute towards the 5GB limit, so it would be one of those things I would not do for hours on end on a 3G connection. Also, according to some reports Skype has the tendency to also use bandwidth when it's not in use, racking up 1.5GB of usage so it's a good idea to shut off Skype when it's not in use as well.
