Does Verizon have a network of identifiable public wi-fi hotspots similar to the network of hot spots operated by the major cable companies?

They use to have at certain locations. But that was many years ago.
i don’t think they have them anymore.

And I was right. They are no longer...☹️
Verizon once had one of the largest such networks. Then abandoned or sold them and for a while offered free Boingo. I am not sure if they still offer Boingo (now being Frontier).
Most have abandoned their select wifi spots. Instead favoring stealing some ot their customers wifi capability to make the home/bussiness routers act as wi-fi "hot" spots.
Customers then lose speed and pay for the power to let the ISP run "hot" spots.
