8pm-10pm speed slump
mrhinman
Newbie

I consistently get 2.7Mbps throughout the day until about 8 pm to 10 pm when it drops off to 1.3-1.5Mbps.

What's the deal Verizon?  Are you throttling me?  I'm trying to switch from satellite to streaming television, but when your speeds drop so dramatially, how I can I?

There are no reasonable alternatives to Verizon DSL in my area.

I have tried resetting my modem, my router, all connected devices, in addition to resetting my router password to assure no one is sipping off my connection.

Thank you so much for posting this. We need to get Verizon moving on this issue as it seems to be causing widespread problems. I live in rural VA, just east of Roanoke. It started happening around 1/5/13, and the past few nights have been worse than ever at 0.20-0.50 mbps down (strangely, I almost always have good ping numbers and upload speeds). I talked to a neighbor tonight who has been experiencing the same slowness in the evening.

There definitely seems to be a pattern where the speed drops between 7:00 and 11:00pm each night, then it gradually recovers later at night and through a good part of the day. I believe the Verizon network is not robust enough to handle the amount of users and data passing through. This may have been made worse by all the new gadgets people got over the holidays.

After speaking with 3 support techs and being assigned a tech from "executive support" the issue still hasn't been resolved. They sent a new modem/router and I have checked, rechecked, plugged and unplugged all connections, filters, possible noise sources in the house, though since the problem started suddenly and with no changes to anything in the house I have to think the cause of the problem is the outside lines or network.

Unfortunately, I live in a rural area with no alternative ISP whatsoever. I keep telling myself that Verizon DSL is cheap, unlimited and better than satellite or dial-up, but it gets more difficult and frustrating every day. I sincerely hope that Verizon recognizes and addresses this obvious network quality issue soon. Or at least acknowledges that the problem exists and that those of us affected should all sit tight until a resolution is found. It's the corporate silent treatment that really gets under my skin.

It's almost midnight now and I'm STILL getting slow speed tests!

To all who need help:

#1 Please post the Transceiver Statistics from your modem.

If you do not know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) What is the brand and model of your router?

#2 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

SubAstute: Did Verizon recently bring DSL out to you or have they had it out by your way for a while?

Smith6612: We have had DSL at our rural residential location since July 2006. There have been scattered issues in the past where we can get to certains sites but not others (DNS lookup failures), though no chronic speed problems until now. We once had a speed issue after a severe electrical storm and it was fixed by a technician who replaced some fried connectors in our neighborhood, but that was constant and different than what we're experiencing now.

dslr595148:

Here's the requested info:

The brand new modem/router sent by Verizon support last week in hopes it would resolve the issue is a D-Link DSL-2750B. I can get to the admin page for the modem, but please specify the exact info you need for the Transceiver Stats.

And the traceroute test, though I'll perform this again in the thick of the issue tomorrow evening between 7 and 11pm (right now I'm getting 1.48mbps, though I should have 3mbps service). Please note that my latency is usually quite a low number even when the speed drops:

Latency almost always seems good, but data transfer is horrible this time of night. Right now the test from Speedtest.net is 0.34 mb/ps, and here are the traceroute results:

Sad to say if you have the D-Link DSL-2750B:

#1 No one here knows, yet, how to find that info.

#2 I have heard/read that Verzion can remotely get access to the modem and get that info.
