Can I Use My G1100 Instead of CR1000A with 500/500 Speed Upgrade?

I am going to upgrade from 200/200 to 500/500 with Verizon as I do not need 1gb. I am currently owning G1100. I told the sales rep I do not want to plug in the new  router CR1000a which is coming with new plan since I want to use my own G1100. He said the new router is much better and all I need to do just plug in new one and my current password stays the same!?

I am wondering if I change to 500/500 without plugging in the new router, does it work which will give me true 500/500? How does Verizon affect 500/500 plan with my old own G1100? I am not the wiz tech but I think it does not make sense! Unless I need to plug in the new router so Verizon can kick in new plan. Then if it does not work I can change back to G1100 with new plan?? Since I have the camera security system I do not want to screw it up with new router and switch back to old!? Appreciate of your input.

I would first try to use the G1100 you have already; it can handle up to 1 Gb. From the posts in this forum, that seems to be the router that is the most reliable. The G3100 and the newer CR1000A both seem to have numerous issues in some situations. Several have gone back to their old G1100s after trying one of the newer ones. If your old G1100 works without any issues, go with it. You can try the CR1000A and see if you like it better. If so, great! If not, stick with the G1100. (If you are renting the CR1000A, return it if you don't use it.)

The G1100 works perfectly fine with gigabit Internet. I've used one for years. So it should also work fine with the lower speed tiers.

I have my two CR1000a routers because I run a 10GbE backbone on my home LAN. And it was an inexpensive way to get Wifi 6E (6Ghz wifi) as well as additional 10GbE, 5 GbE, and 2.5 GbE connections on my home LAN.

I don't understand how you can use the CR1000A without issues. Are you sure you're getting your full download and upload speeds? I had the ONT swapped and tried two separate CR1000A routers. Both were straight up worthless and gave me sub-100mbps uploads. Using G1100 gave me my usual 900+mbps. I wanted to like/use the CR1000A for the WiFi 6E support, but it was unusable for me.

Is your cable fine? Could you go to CR1000A's port settings page to see what link speed is negotiated?

I'm able to reliably get 9.4 Gbps speeds from my 10GbE devices connected to my two CR1000a units. The same speeds I get from my three 10GbE switches.

I am not using my CR1000a units connected to my ONT. I have an earlier Fios router connected to the ONT. And then I have an Asus router connected  to a DMZ on that older Fios router.

My two CR1000a units are connected to my 10GbE backbone on their WAN port. And then I have 10GbE, 5GbE, or 2.5 GbE devices or switches connected to those ports.

My pS5 and two Series X boxes connect to switches going through the CR1000a units They have worked without issues connected to them. And then I have my WiFi 6E and WiFi 6 devices connected to the wireless from the CR1000a units. So far, that has also been rock solid.

Sorry for the late response! Actually, I have been working on this proposal and now the rep told me the new router is G3100. Same question with the new G3100? I will talk to the rep again on 11/15/2022. Appreciate all advises.

The important thing to note here is that in this solution with the pair of CR1000As, the two CR1000As are being used with a 10Gb backbone (completely internal to the LAN inside the residence) and WiFi-6. Essentially, they have been reduced to being 10Gb switches and dual WiFi-6 WAPs (wireless access points). Some Fios customers use their old routers to extend WiFi or as a switch when they get a newer Fios router. This is the opposite.

The actual routing to the Internet is through an older router (G1100? G3100?) (The Asus router could have probably also been used as the gateway router to the Internet.)

Just to add another potential wrench, with my Fios service, I don't have a Verizon router anywhere on my network. Instead, I have a "low-end" Intel PC running Linux and routing software connected via ethernet to the ONT. I have Netgear Orbi mesh routers and satellites (running in bridge mode) to get wireless connectivity throughout the house.

Capricorn1, that's spot on and reflects my own personal experience. I had the G1000 since 2016. I tried to "upgrade" to the G3100 and immediately noticed decreased upload speeds over ethernet from 900 mbps on G1000 to 300 mbps on G3100. So after trying many different solutions and changing many settings, I returned the G3100. Then I tried two different CR1000A routers and they would both drop all the way down to 50 mbps uploads very frequently. Needless to say, I got rid of all three horrible routers and went back to the G1000. If I upgrade to 2 gbps, I will probably build my own router. I have NO IDEA what is going on over at Verizon's engineering department where they put out back-to-back routers that give inferior wired upload speeds than their model from 2016...

Thanks. With all responses here I think I will keep G1100 to avoid headache!
