Well here is a new one and I am anxious to know if anyone else is or has this problem.  One of my favorite websites is www.allrecipes.com    That being said for the past week, when I get an email from them or TRY to type in their address in my browser (doesnt matter what brower I use, yahoo, msn, google etc) I am directed to allreipes argentina and get an error.  I can not go any further!!  Hello.............I am in the USA!!!!! I contacted allrecipes via their facebook page, only way I could make contact, and I recieved a basic response,  Clear temp files, use different browser etc all of what I had done already.  I replied with that info....only to get another response that they have found  that this seems to be happening to primarily VERIZON customers.  They sent me a link with their IP address, when I clicked on it, I was taken to the USA site homepage, but once I tried to go anywhere else on the site, I am automatically redirected to Argentina.

VErizon will not allow me to post the error code that  get when I am sent to the Argentina website.

Here is the second email response from Allrecipes.com

Hi there,

Thank you so much for your email! I'm very sorry you are being redirected to the wrong Allrecipes site!

The redirect problem seems to be happening primarily to Verizon customers - do you use Verizon for your internet provider?

It seems that your internet provider may be sending you to the wrong IP address for "allrecipes.com." When you look up "allrecipes.com," Verizon is sending your computer to the IP address for "allrecipes.com.ar" or "allrecipes.com.mx," etc.

Some users were able to resolve the error by visiting the correct page at http://64.94.140.201 and then clearing the local file cache. The method for doing this varies from browser to browser, but most major browsers invalidate or disable cache when Ctrl+F5 is pressed.

We value our users very much and we’re so sorry about this inconvenience. We are optimistic that Verizon will be able to solve this problem, but unfortunately we are unable to provide more detailed information at this time.

Thank you for visiting the site, and for your patience!

First things first, I would flush your DNS cache. You don't say what OS you are using, but in Windows you go to the command prompt (Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt or simply Start>Run cmd), and type in ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. This clears any current (and possibly incorrect) DNS entries you have cached on your system.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, you might try changing your DNS servers to something different. I've heard suggested that OpenDNS is a good way to go, but haven't tried it personally. I have occasionally set 4.2.2.1 or 4.2.2.2 as my alternate DNS server when I'm having trouble. If you need assistance in how to change these settings let me know. (Tech support *should* be able to walk you through it, but I certainly can't make any promises.)

I am not able to do that.  When I type www.allrecipes.com it takes me to the argentina site.  I assume you read the response from Allrecipes.com dealing with a problem within Verizon? and it (verizon) redirecting me to a different site) I get a "system error"..  I can access the site using their IP address but can not surf the site at all, when I try to surf it I am redirected to Argentina.   I am open to any and all suggestions as to how to access it.

I have been unable to duplicate your problem.  I clicked on the link in your post and went to the correct site. Also tried typing it in and went to the correct site.  No problem looking around the site.

This is problem is obviously not effecting all Verizon customers.  You should call tech support and hope you get a knowledgable agent who is willing to spend the time to resolve your problem.

That said, the problem could be due to Allrecipies actions.  Sometimes sites make internal changes that cause weired and selective connection problems.

**Somegirl**  Thank you for your suggestion.  I did as suggested, which it did not correct the problem.  We have 3 computers, an ipad, and 2 iphones and none will access the site.  I was trying to find a common denominator.  Unsure of myself as far as changing the DNS.

Called Verizon tech support (gawd) was on the phone for 30+ minutes with first line tech support who kept telling me it was Allrecipes.com problem not Verizon.  I asked to speak to a supervision and then finally they decided to send me to Premium tech support  with no charge. Hmmmm..........well you were correct it was the DNS.  The tech there agreed with you and made some changes to access the site for me.  I am now accessing it via my cache.  He is also going to inform upper level supervision of the issue.

Long story short I can access the site now and I just wanted you to know that you diagnosis was correct!  Thank you!!!!

I work at Allrecipes and we're aware of this issue.  What we've noticed is that it primarily affects Verizon customers.

The effects are as you noticed:  You type in "allrecipes.com" but you wind up on "allrecipes.com.au", or "allrecipes.com.ar", etc.  The key thing we've noticed is that users get misdirected to one of our international websites that follow the pattern "allrecipes.com.??"  It could be MX for Mexico, AU for Australia, BR for Brazil, or AR for Argentina. The actual site you wind up on seems to change from day to day.  Mexico used to get most of the misdirected traffic, and now it's Argentina 90% of the time.

We suspect that Verizon's "DNS Assistance" is part of the issue.  If that is the case however, we have no direct way of verifying, so I can't say for certain that Verizon is where the problem lies.

However, as you found out, pointing your DNS to something besides the default Verizon DNS servers will fix it.  Even if you just change from the default settings to use the non-DNS Assistance servers (xx.xx.xx.12 to xx.xx.xx.14), or point to some public DNS servers entirely like Google, Open DNS, etc. it will enable you to correctly find the "allrecipes.com" website.

In a critical situation, if changing the DNS servers is beyond your technical know-how, you can try visiting the Allrecipes website by using the IP address directly, bypassing any possible DNS problems:

http://64.94.140.201

There are portions of the website that, when you click somewhere, will try using "allrecipes.com" in the link, but if you need to search for recipes or see a particular recipe, you should be okay.

We're still researching this issue and why it only seems to happen to Verizon customers, but without direct help from Verizon support, we're limited in what we can do.

I might know what's going on here.

I run customer support for a different website, and two people have reported that they have been unable to reach the site from any of their computers at home since mid- to late-November. One is a Verizon customer in the 100.0.0.0 - 100.41.255.255 IP range; the other is a Douglas Fast Net customer in the 100.42.160.0/20 range.  Coincidence?  I doubt it.

We went through the usual troubleshooting steps, firewall, etc.  They both ran traceroutes to the site, and both got a 'destination net unreachable' message.  After much digging and teeth-pulling, the Douglas customer finally found someone at Douglas who seems to know what's going on.

I believe I know what is happening. *****.com or their host (***.net ) may be filtering the IP block of 100.42.160.0/20 . I know that sounds like a lot of finger pointing, but we have run into a lot of websites that hadn't updated filter lists. We've had issues with BYU, a number of government sites, Epic Games, and others.

When I wrote to the same person at Douglas, I was told:

What has happened is we had been issued this new IP block from ARIN last year. In previous years it had been on a BOGON list of unused IP addresses and some equipment didn't get their filters updated. It looks like it is the whole 100.42.161.0/20 that is being filtered, or just not routed on their network.

This sounds feasible to me, but I won't know until tomorrow at the earliest if the same is true for Verizon customers. Having IPs in such a close range, though, I think this might be the case.

Aaron, try contacting your website's ISP, and see if they are filtering these IP ranges.

If anyone runs into this same problem with other websites, I hope this information will be helpful to you, too.

With Verizon there is a two hour lease on their IP addresses. At night when you go to bed, disconnect your modem. Reconnect in the morning and you will have a new ip address. If it's a bogon issue, then that well fix it. If it is what i "think it is" then you Need to change the dns in your dsl router. What router do you have?
