DSL internet speed

I have DSL enhanced speed 3.1 to 7 Mbps plan with Actiontec GT784WNV router. During last three weeks the speed fluctuates mainly around 1.4 Mbps UP and .7 DWN. Ocasionaly I get 5.1Mps UP but for a short time.

Until now I had no problems, internet speed was OK but lately (3 weeks) the speed is unaccepltable low. Shouldn't I get 3.1 Mbps minimum? How can this problem be addressed? Please help.image

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon

    news.giganews.com

traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
    1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
    2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
    3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
    4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
    5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
    6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms

Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

In order to help you, I would need to see the same kind of information that Smith6612 requested from another user. Here are his questions requested from another user. Here are his questions/directions.

Visit http://192.168.1.1/

Log into the modem using one of following usernames and passwords, if you have not changed it:

admin/password

admin/password1

admin/admin

admin/admin1

admin/verizon

admin/verizon1

Once in the modem, click on Status. Then, click on DSL Status or WAN Status.

A page should appear with information such as Attenuation, SN Margin, and your speed. Please post the contents of this page, removing information such as your IP address, MAC Address, or your PPPoE username.

Today speed test shows 5.09 Mbps UP, wich is acceptable but who knows for how long I am going to have this speed?

It might be best to have Verizon lock your speed at 5888kbps down, 864kbps up to ensure this isn't being caused by noise on your line. You don't seem to be hitting a large amount of errors. Locking the speed there will also ensure the connection's stability.

Your problem is likely being caused by congestion. Verizon will need to move you to less congested equipment. Ask them to re-provision the circuit for 5Mbps and provide FastPath to you in the process, in addition to disabling ASSIA on your line so it doesn't go and turn your speed up too high.

Thank you for the suggestion. The challenge is to reach someone at verizon who understands what I am talking about.

Will try it and see how it goes than I'll post my observations and comments.
