I would suggest anyone using Verizon wireless DSL to run, as quickly as possible, to another provider. Verizon is the most inept, incompetant entity I have ever encountered. Possibly eight hours this last four weeks trying to get my service to get running full time but no results. I've been up to the third tier three times, still no results. Unbelievably bad service.

In detail, what HAS been the issue with the service? Is it constantly going down, slowing down or has it never been operational in the timeframe you mentioned? That info would help us help you out.

The same thing has been happening to me and I'm pretty much resigned to jump ship.  DSL has been down for 11 days, about 8 hrs spent on the phone, waited all day last saturday for a service call, which never happened with not even a heads up or apology..  Tech did come out Sunday and claimed it was a problem with the central switching? Was told everything had been repaired by text on Tuesday.  Got home from work to find still no connection.   After another service visit Wednesday  I was informed it was an underground cable problem, which was "repaired" on Thursday. Finally got DSL signal to find that I still can't connect.  Another hour on the phone and was told yet again that there was a problem at another switching site and it should be repaired within 48 hrs - which will make a solid 2 weeks without service ( if the repair actually happens). I guess the jokes on us haha.

I agree...And then some.

A new laptop, trying to connect via cat5 wired to an existing DSL Westell 6100 (old one).  Old PC works.

Have spent 25 + hrs in India, only once reaching level 3 who pushed the blame on the HP Laptop.  I get connected, all settings as should be. Can enter web address, but they don't respond.  Pings are okay most times.

Have since tested and connected with the laptop on two other ISP's.  Successfully.  PC works on other networks!!

Once, after several hrs working with level 1. Tech said he would call back in 1hr, they saw problems on their end. Never called back.  (found out it was 12:30 a.m. in India, think he wanted to go home!!!  Started over the next day, after more struggles and  getting no where-rerunning same level 1 checks and tests, asked to speak with a supervisor.  None available for 30 mins....would call me.  Never did!    Have been through 5 different  'tech', plus a level 3 who waved an $89 charge to blame HP.

Last time,  after agreeing I had an old (since 2007) Westell 6100, said the would send a newed generation modem in 2-3 business days. Business day 5, called and they said they changed their mind and were not shipping any. Seems they will tell you anything to get you off the phone.

Am about ready to give up and reluctantly put all my eggs in one basket and bundle Comcast.

You can use the Verizon Troubleshooter report and try to fix issues with Internet service, as well as to schedule a repair. You can access the Troubleshooter here:  http://www.verizon.com/repair. You can also find other tools on our Residential Support page that may help you diagnose your issue: http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/.

I have been looking through those sites looking for help with my WIRED modem/ new pc problem to no avail. They do cover a lot of wireless issues but littled on wired.      And any modems/routers displayed are not the antique I have been dealing with.

In addition to online chat before ever putting myself through the pain/suffering of calling and getting 'Peggy' in Mumbai or where ever. who understands my issue, and not just a level 1 tech running me thru the same set of basic problem determination aids each time you call hoping they can wear you down if it is not covered by the std level 1 cheat sheet.

I am also perusing the forums looking for similar problems, as I would hope most who have problems would do. Hoping and praying.  That is how I have ended up here.

My basic question would be,

if a known working Win 7 laptop, that connects to the internet  using the wired ethernet port and cat5 cable thru other ISP's needs any special 'magic' done to it, so a known working Verizon wired modem currently accepting sucessfully an IBM Thinkpad running XP will accept the NEW Laptop.  I have also carried the new laptop to another Verizon acct, using a newer ADSL2 plus Versalink and it will not work there either.....so the problem is clearly Verizon issue.

Hello! Thank you for calling. My name is Peggy. What is problem please? 😛

Check to make sure your old laptop isn't using PPPoE to connect. If it is, your modem is bridged. For the Ethernet to work out of the box, the modem needs to be holding the PPPoE connection. If your area uses DHCP, you need to leave the modem off overnight to allow the MAC address lease to clear if the modem is bridged. That should allow the PC to connect.

I've live chatted with three Verizon techs on the Indian subcontinent.  Problem - I cannot change anything in my settings and specifically cannot turn off the vacation reply message.  This began in June and the message returns - think Groundhog Day.  The techs take over my computer, delete the message, tell me everything is fine, only it isn't.  I've smartened up, now I don't disconnect until I've send myself an email.  Even when it's off for a few minutes, it returns when I log back in.  During the most recent chat after assuring me that all was well and after I proved it wasn't, I was told that "we aren't certain we can help you" ah, the royal we.  When I asked who could and what the next steps would be, I was given a number.  Doubt that will work.  Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for trying to help 'Peggy'.  I am pretty sure we are DHCP. The new lap top is and believe I saw that in the old IBM also.

I left the Westell 6100 powered off and all the Laptops for 30 hrs.  Powered up tonight and had the save results No diff!

This is my original problem......

New HP laptop say LAN connected in the lower right corner. When I click on Explorer, MSN site comes up on the display,

if I try to click on any of the stories...get no reply, wheel(clock)  just spins.

I can also enter google.com, comes back, can click NEWS, and the news story headlines will come back.  If I click on any of the articles, back to the wheel spinning.

I am close, but no cigar!   I found the original box the modem, and instructions that came with setup, it has the startup cd with it.  Any idea if I should try inserting that in the new HP laptop as a near last resort and see what happens???

The Startup CD serves no purpose other than to set up the account and install any software from back then that you may have wanted to use. Especially if the disk is a few years old, I wouldn't install it due to whatever compatibility issues that might prop up with a Windows 7 machine. It's what made Vista look terrible when in reality it is a nice operating system riddled by unprepared developers making buggy code.

As far as the Peggy comment goes, I was playing along with the joke. Just ignore that, lol. As for the problem, I take it this only occurs when you click on links to other pages on a website, but visiting any website at will by entering in the address for it works without a problem, but only on your Verizon line. Correct? I just want to get this straight before dealing with the actual problem. The DSL connection since you're connected to it from the sounds of things, does not and should not need anything special by any means.

For some additional information, do the websites you're trying to visit have advertisements located on them? Does the link eventually load when you click on it again? Have you tried using other DNS servers besides Verizon's, by any chance?
