I am consistently loosing connectivity.  My router and modem (Westall 2200) have worked fine, until the last three days.  Resetting modem works, but I loose connection again with 1/2 hr or so.  Disconnecting router from modem has not solved the problem.  Is is possible my modem is bad?  Suggestions?

First thing you need to do is look at the logs on the modem/router to see why you are losing connectivity. You need to connect to the router, login in as the administrator and look at the logs, and the data on the negotiations with the CO on the transmit levels and line losses.

There are all sorts of possible causes, but you need to look at the logs first to get an idea of what you are looking for. When I had DSL, if I could hear thunder, my DSL service as down. In bad weather, I lost about 500kbps on the downlink, and about 100kbps on the uplink. Very bluntly, the copper pair between my residence and the CO isn't very good. However the problem could be missing DSL filters somewhere, equipment issues at the CO, equipment issues with the Modem/router, or just a not very good copper pair. So get a look at the logs, and that should point you toward the problem.

When FiOS became available, I went to FiOS from DSL, and no longer have any weather related issues.

I have the exact same problem - just got off the phone with the tech in India for the 2nd time this week. My area code experienced an outage 3 days ago - went crazy thinking it was my PC as I had no way to know it was just my area code. Up all night re doing settings etc., lost $$ on ebay etc. Anyhow, that gets resolved and I get up today only to find the same situation again. I call tech support and they tell me everything is fine in terms of connection etc., so they then go through re setting my Westell 2200 and I'm back BUT when I ask them 'whats to prevent this from happening again tomorrow ?'  the tech says: 'just type in those numbers I gave you in your browser and click 'connect. I ask: 'Whats that about ? I never had to go through this before !" and I was told that my Westell is an old model.....BUT....they can connect me with the Billing Office so as to buy a new one !!!! I asked 'you're telling me I have to pay for the replacement your equipment that I already paid for once ??" Yes, and, for only .99 cents a month extra it will be warranted for life !! I told 'em 'I think its time to call Time-Warner and look into Road Runner'. No comment. I am NOT a happy Verizon customer right now....

So, if you know the number to type in, you can 'reset' your modem when this happens - actually, first check to see if you get an 'UP' or a 'DOWN' message on the screen. Apparently if your modem is screwing up like mine was you will see 'Down'. After it re connects it will change to 'Up' and you're good to go.The tech. told me to leave my modem always 'On' also. One think I liked about this modem deal is I could shut off the connection to the net when I go to bed but leave my PC running.I hope this helps....

PS - I'm also ticked off that they don't have a way to notify you when the server is down - it would have sparred me a lot of unnecessary aggravation !!! I should have but couldn't keep away from messing with my settings as I thought for sure one of my kids screwed something up. Spent entire days running virus software - you name it !! I'm VERY lucky I didn't screw it up but good. Even if they ran a scroll feed or gave a news announcement on our local news channel - something for [edited] !!

Do they not realize what this causes people ??? Especially the issue with ebay customers !!
