I live out in the country where DSL is a luxery afforded to me my a Home Run Hookup. I currently use the Westell 6100G supplied by Verizon. Curious if I can switch to a router to use laptop and desktop at the same time? Speed is ~ 0.95.

You can. Just bridge the Westell 6100G and insert your own router into the mix. You'll want to make sure your router is set up to use PPPoE so that it can obtain an IP address from Verizon (in most cases).

Reverting the settings back is as simple as setting the modem back to PPPoE.
Speed here doesn't matter too much. That 0.96Mbps you're getting will be divided across the machines based on how each machine uses the connection.
