Computer as Phone with landline?

Hello All, 

We just had our bundle installed including a landline. 

We have no phone. 

Is there a way to use our computer to make and receive calls with the Verizon VOI phone service?

The landline and VoIP offerings are separate services. I'm sure there is a way to route normal phone calls through a computer, but I have to ask: Why not just go get a phone?
