The email said Order due date was 8/17/09, which is a few months ago. I do not recall making changes to my phone service. I also do not know what it means.

sounds like, perhaps your long distance provider has changed... maybe you were "slammed"... I can only assume
I would reccomend contacting verizon billing 1-800-VERIZON Mon - Fri 8 am -9 pm and Sat 9 am - 5 pm.
