My home does not have an NID box. What wouild be involved in upgrading to an NID?

Sure it does. May have to call during so called "Business hours". These days its rare not to have a NID or OID. They have been standard for so many decades. In areas I lived in they added them to old wiring automatically. But of course some areas may still have ancient wiring.
Other possibilities are to try the twitter for verizon support or the chat option on this website (under contact us).
