No Dial Tone - No NID

I have no dial tone and am unable to locate an NID outside my house.  Is it possible we don't have one?  We have traditional (non-Fios) service.

check  in the kitchen , sometimes the nid will be located  in the kitchen jack which could be your point of entry or could be located in closets or utilty room. but first unplug all phones in your house and plug them back one by one to try to isolate the pronlem

If your NID isn't found in the kitchen, check the areas around your electrical panel or electrical meter, including the rafters in your basement if you have one. The NID is bonded to an Earthened ground, so it needs to be nearby to where the ground is commonly found, which would be that location. It may not be a plastic box and could be instead just tubes and iron framing, which would be an old style NID/protector.
