No visual or audible notifications for new voice mails when there are expired messages

I had someone call me today saying he had left a voice mail, which I never was notified about. I was expecting that when new voice mails arrive, the light on my phone will blink, and I will get the interrupted dial-tone when picking up the phone to make a new call.  This has always worked in the past.

I did a test calling my landline, and left a message, and received no notification.

So then I went to check my voice mail, and it said "You have an expired message that is over 30 days old.  You have to process this message before we take you to your mailbox."  So I did that, deleting the old message I had saved 6 weeks ago, and there were 7 voice mails (including my test one) to listen to.

This is a BUG in the Verizon voice mail system.  Even if you have an expired message that has to be processed, I should still get the normal notification that a new voice mail has arrived.

I called customer service, and after dealing with the painful automated call processing system for 15 minutes, finally spoke to someone to explain the problem.  He told me they will note the problem in their systems, but it most likely will not get fixed.

Bad design Verizon.  Notifications to the phone should always be sent even if there are expired messages in the voicemail box.

Not sure what phone service you have. If it is fios digital voice log in at verizon.com/fiosvoice and make sure the message waiting indicator is on. Voice mail settings> voice mail notifications> the first box should be checked.

If it is on, toggle the feature off and back on.Make sure you save the setting between turning off and on.

If you have any other phone service, there may be a star code for this, but I am not sure. Doesn't sound right that they cannot fix this, especially if you are paying for voicemail service. You may want to call back in.

I have FIOS service.  I get a visible and audible notification on voice mails once expired voice mails are cleared out of the voice mail box.  So I don't need to go and set it up as you suggest.

So now it works fine, unless I decide to save a message and don't clear it out after 30 days of it being saved.
