It depends on what's wrong.  It could be a bad jack, incorrectly wired jack, bad wiring, or disconnected from the main terminal outside your house.   Anything other than a bad cable is fairly easy, if you know how to connect it.

The first thing I would recommend is do an internet search for telephone wiring or go to your public library and get a self help book which will explain it. You can start with the link below.  The pictures will be extremely helpful.  Once you see how it is wired you can check the jacks and external connection.  If that doesn't fix it, you will have to decide if you want to pay someone to fix it or attempt to trace the wiring yourself.

I had this happen to me. Most of the wires were not working except for the one in the kitchen. A tech guy came out and disconnected all but the kitchen one. It would have been nice to have all of them working, but not a necessity, since we have the o e phone and printer hooked up to that one and the rest of the handsets are just plugged into the wall.
