I'm trying to port my phone number from optimum to fios. When I call optimum to cancel my account they said that I need to have food port the number before closing the account or I'll lose the number. When I call verizon they say that they cant port it until i close the account. I called optimum back and they gave me the same info. I'm afraid to cancel before its ported and risk losing thenumber. Please help!

The correct procedure is to port out your number to the receiving company. In this case it is verizon. You are not saying if this number is cellular or home phone number.

in both cases you must keep the number active in order to port it to the other company.

Verizon gave you bad information. Porting is federally regulated. In both cases the number must be active at time of port or you lose the number.

Thank you! And it is a home line (cable) through optimum currently.

No difference. You need to contact verizon (porting department) or follow the steps i gave you previously.
