Retrieve Messages from home phone

When I go to retrieve my messages from wireless to home phone get a recording no messages in this box, but yet when I come home

my mailbox is full.  It is getting very frustrating when you are on the road and know an important message may be in your mailbox

Please advise why this happens. thank you
