Takes one week just to restore service???

Why does it take a week just to have some to come restore my phone/internet service when Verizon broke it in the first place?  So I get no service from Verizon for one week and still paying them?  For what?  I feel I am being ripped off and Verizon should refund me one week of Phone/Internet service.
