Tone after dialling

After I dial a number, I get 5 or so beep tones and then the ringing tone.  It doesn't affect the service; it is just annoying.  Has anyone else experienced this (I am new to VZ) and is there a fix?

Some phones, especially cordless, do a store and forward. Meaning you press the numbers on the phone. You press send and then it makes the calling tones for all the numbers you entered. To see if thats the case, please try other phones in your house.

It could be possible Voice Mail is activated on your line and you have some messages waiting in there. if you shut off your answering machine, does Verizon's Voice Mail system pick up?
