Verizon Voice Mail hijacked my answering machine!

I wondered why my answering machine was not receiving messages.  I discovered Verizon Voice Mail hijacked them even though I never signed up!  So I unwillingly registered a Voice Mailbox so I could retrieve the lost messages.  Please explain how that happened.

All of our telephone subscribers gets a free voicemail with us. With the voicemail, you can access it from any landline or cell phone. You have the convenience of listening to your messages from work or on the road from your cell phone. Should you want it removed and go back to your answering machine, we can help with that.
