Voicemail - how is this easier?

OK, since getting FIOS, my answering machine does not get a chance to pick up my voicemail mesages. Instead, they go somewhere in my FIOS service.

Now, instead of a little blinking light on my phone, I have to memorize a different number, remember to dial that (whether I know I have a message or not) and then go through some prompts to retireve my messages.

Can someone tell me how this is better?
