Voicemail

We've had FIOS for some years but did not have television service. When we finally got television service, apparently the system switched our voicemail from the facility on the phone to some Verizon service where we're supposed to call a number for our voicemail rather than get it off the telephone itself where it was previously recorded. I strongly resent that we weren't informed about this and that as a result we have lost any number of voicemails. Please tell how we can restore our voicemail to our telephone, not to some Verizon message collection center.
