contact list keeps reloading

Upon receiving a new phone (Convoy 2) due to the same issue, my friend's new phone is continuing to reload his contacts. Sometimes it repeats the first name over and over and sometimes it adds the whole entry again and again.   It is also mixing up names and numbers.  He has been to the Verizon store and the agent he spoke with could not help and told him to get a new phone, which  he did.  The new phone is doing the same thing.  (His computer is down, so I am inquiring for him.)   Does he need an exorcism or what??????
