why does the home phone not work like it used to when it was hard wired?

any good reason to keep a wall phone if when the internet or the power is down the phone is down?

Is there anyway to get my old phone back to the days when it was hard wired? 

I am old, same house and Verizon for 46+ years - what is the purpose of an emergency phone is it can not be used in an emergency ?
