why does my phone show private on outgoing calls

You MAY have outgoing callerid block turned on.  Depends on type of service.  You can turn on off at the appropriate websete all use Star codes.  Following is for FIOS although it probably is the same for others

*32  Deactivates outgoing Calller blocking (all)

*31 Activates outgoing callerid blocking (all)

Personally I do have it turned on, and when I want my phone number to show up I first enter *82 pause and then the rest of the number.

If you don't have all enabled *67 block calledid for one call
