voicemail signalled on home phone, but don't have voicemail

Hi, I have a standard Verizon landline, no voicemail (the phone has its own message box). Now I keep getting a message on my phone that there is a remote voicemail waiting, and I shld contact the phone company to get the code. But when I call customer service, they say there is no Verizon voicemail and can't explain it - anyone have any idea whats going on? thanks!!
