How do I use voice-to-text?

I have recently acquired an LG G3 and am having trouble with texting.  I thought there was a voice-to-text option but there is no microphone on the virtual keyboard. I have searched several forums and tried many suggestions.  I press the gear, all that pops up is the handwriting tool and clipboard.  Is this not fixable?  thank you in advance.

Make sure in your settings, (Language & input) that google voice typing is checked off. Then the microphone will be on your keyboard on the left.
