We are using a lot more data through our verizon jetpack... could someone have hacked into our service? could device be defective?
New Jetpack last March `16...good for 3+ months...now using much more data...nothing new in our usage..no games, videos,facebook, movies..........why the VERY high usage...defective device?...service hacked?...HELP!

While it is always in the realm of possibility it is unlikely that your device or service has been hacked. What is more likely is that you have a bad update or a series of several large updates recently downloaded from your currently approved connected devices. As long as your Jetpack is powered on it will provide internet connectivity to any device that is connected. That includes active and passive (such as automatic updates) communication to the internet.
If you have concerns you should reset your Jetpack and then configure a new wireless password to share with your preferred devices. This would cut off any moochers who may be connected without your knowledge.
You should also build a habit of powering off the Jetpack when it is not in active use. That way you have more visible control over who is using the device and for what at that time. This will also help you break down the unbilled usage reports you can request from VZW so that you can isolate which machines are draining your data.
Finding a data leak is a difficult task. Troubleshooting and isolating devices is a time consuming process that requires assistance from 3rd party tools and alternative configurations. For example connecting everything through a proxy device that has a data usage monitor installed. This often goes beyond the skill set and interests of most users. For the rest of us simple best practices mentioned above will get you started along with some trial and error to isolate the problem.
