I upgraded today and got the free Verizon Ellipsis with my plan, and I have two questions to ask about it. #1, why am I now seeing a $10 monthly fee for it when I was never told anything about that in the store? And #2, why does it have its own phone #? Should I be concerned that I am being taken for a date ride that I didn't sign up for?

So usually with these "free" promotions the device does not have a cost associated with it in itself. However the "free" device still requires a service agreement of 2 years.
So, with the free Ellipsis tablet offers which I have seen, you get the device free of charge, but must keep it with active service for 2 years. The fee for the device with your plan is $10 per month, plus any applicable service taxes.
The device itself is free, you are simply paying for the service for that device, so it has access to Verizon's data network.
