Why won't Verizon allow SMS and MMS to be sent over WiFi. At my home I can not send a picture message or get data. So I use WiFi calling so why can't I text on WiFi? I think they make the coverage maps look better then they are. It say I am supposed to get 4G all around me but some reason I get 5G when the map shows no 5G around me at all ( again making things look better than they are). So with lots of 4G around me I took a 4G phone and see how that worked. I could send MMS but was still using WiFi calling. And zero data I think the maps are not true. I somehow get 5G but I get nothing. Come on VZW I am only 5 minutes outside of Orlando it's not like I am in the middle of nowhere.

I understand how important it is to be able to use Wi-Fi messaging and get quick responses. Does this only happen when connected To Wi-Fi? Do you have this issue when outside of your home?
No issue texting mms away from my home with good cellular coverage. I can text an image in about 3 seconds.
I spoke to 2 Verizon techs yesterday & they both said that I should be able to text mms over wifi when I have poor, or no cellular coverage.
I AM able to receive mms texts over wifi. I just sent an image with an iphone on our wifi and it went out in seconds and I received it 10 seconds later on my Pixel. Also replicated the same with friends using AT&T on our wifi.
My wifi signal is "excellent" with full bars & 5GHz.
I just tried resetting all my network settings. One (temporary) development is I was able to send an image in about 2:20 instead of 5-10 minutes and it was received by an iphone about 10 seconds later. Once "sent", Message said "2 min" even though technically it had just completed sending.
Tried turning off "Chat features", but after 4:00 waiting for my text to send I gave up. After turning Chat back on, after 4:20 minutes the iphone then received but Message still said "Sending...". After 9 minutes, still says "Sending..."

We want to set the right expectations for you so that everything will work as you need it. I know how crucial that is.
It isn't that you can't be on Wi-Fi when sending MMS. Its just that the MMS can't go over Wi-Fi. There are a few apps that can do it, such as Verizon Messages, because they process them differently to get them to go, but traditional MMS technology which is what most text apps will use won't work for that. Wi-Fi being on doesn't block your data from working, so if you have a strong data signal and you're on Wi-Fi it can still work at times, but there are also times when if your data isn't strong the Wi-Fi will stop that from working.
As for why you received the one message, its likely you just had a stronger signal for a moment, or their texting app sent that a different way from traditional MMS.

First, this is the first time anyone at Verizon has told me that you cannot send MMS over wifi. Obviously, that is a huge problem for me, since we have almost zero cellular coverage at our home. Would a network extender make any difference? One tech offered to send one as a solution, but then another said it would not help with MMS.
Second, though Verizon's Message+ did work for sending MMS on my previous Samsung Galaxy S21 over wifi, it is no better than Google Message with my new Pixel 7 Pro. I just tried it again, and it said "Sending..." for 3:40 when the image was received by the iphone. Eventually "Sending..." changed to "Sent". Of course, 3:40 is better than >5 minutes, but it's still nothing like the few seconds it should take.

I definitely apologize if that wasn't communicated, it has always been the case. Message+ should actually work for this over Wi-Fi, it is the rare app that can because it sends it differently. That it is taking some time definitely isn't ideal though I am glad it does go through eventually. Does it help if you are closer to the router? How does data work over that Wi-Fi connection?

I have "excellent" 5GHz signal on wifi. I guarantee that is not a factor. All other data functions are rapid.
Very odd that with my previous Android, Message+ worked great & this phone it does not.
Would a Verizon network extender help with MMS?
So when an iphone is sending an MMS to an Android, why does it work over wifi?

A network extender will help repeat a cellular signal within your structure alongside high speed internet. You should have the same capability over WiFi. To test this out, place your device into airplane mode, then enable WiFi. If the settings are correct on the device, you should still be able to place calls, surf the net, and also message.

That did not answer the question at all. Can you MMS text through a network extender? Since we have no mobile coverage at home, I cannot text. And as you can see from the previous Verizon replies, you cannot text MMS over wifi.
Hey there. I am in the same boat as you regarding cell signal being poor at my house but of course strong wifi for wifi calling. You cannot send mms/sms over wifi, it wont work. If you text to other android users who have chat messages turned on in google messages, youll be sending everything over the wifi (data) connection. Your best option is to get your friends on an app like signal, which does everything over data, or get your friends with android to turn on the chat function in google messages.
I think an extender would work for you, since its basically creating a cell using the internet in your home as the backhaul. (connection to the provider)

@Heather, yes I would like to get a network extender. A tech I spoke with over the weekend offered to send me one free of charge, but then another tech thought we could get MMS over wifi natively. But now that I know that is not true, I would like a network extender. Thanks.

Yes, I have high-speed broadband internet. Verizon is now sending me an extender, so hopefully this solves my problem. I'm just concerned about range. My home run is central to our house/property, but with walls & such... We'll see.

We want to make sure you can do everything you need to with your phone. Extenders do allow for MMS messages.

Finally, someone with the exact same problem as me. It is infuriating that MMS messages are so painfully slow when you have a poor signal at home. When I have a signal away from home pictures are sent in seconds but when home it's minutes of at all. I also use Goolge Messages. My wife uses Verizon+ and has no issues. I will be trying to get a free extender since I pay a lot of money and get no signal at home. If I could just get Ape to support RCS I could get on with my life. 😂
I wouldn't hold my breath on Apple supporting RCS, but why Verizon doesn't support MMS over wifi is the real question. Message+ is only slightly better on my new Pixel 7 Pro. It worked great over wifi on my previous Galaxy S21, but I prefer Google Message.
