We are going to Portugal in April and renting a mobile hot spot. I've never used my phone overseas so want to make sure I don't have any surprises! We plan to use our phones for the internet, GPS, and phone calls/texting/sending pictures to people who have WhatsApp on their phones. I have a few questions ...
- What settings do I need to change on my phone to avoid any extra charges for roaming, etc. and how do I do that?
- How do I set up the phone to accept the rented mobile hot spot?
- I was thinking about setting up the Verizon international option ($10/day if you use it) in case we had to make an emergency phone call. Would I need to change any of the above settings on the phone if I had to make a call this way?
- Is there anything else I need to know or do?
Thanks for your help.

It sounds like you are going on an exciting trip. Making sure that you are covered for this trip is important. Are you renting a mobile spot from a local provider in Portugal? If so, to prevent roaming charges the best thing to do is place your device in Airplane Mode. Mobile Hotspots are portable Wi-Fi devices. Simply connect to the Wi-Fi network for that device. You would need to enable roaming to use the TravelPass option. Click here for instructions: http://spr.ly/6607EkO9x.
