Even though I power off my Android at about 9pm each night and power on about 8am next day, Verizon app shows 10 to 70 mb of data each night about 2 or 3 am. I added up last 30 days and these phantom data add up to over 500 mb. Why and how can this happen?

That is data posted to your account that was used earlier. Data usage is not all in real time. Like writing a check. It doesn’t deduct from your checking account right away. What you should look at is if the totals on your phone, settings, agree with your bill usage at the end of each bill cycle. They should be close.
