Factory reset

Looking at doing a factory reset on my droid razr but need to know if i should backup my sd cards first.  Procedures say that phone and sd cards will be erased.  If that is the case how do I reload everything onto the phone after it is set back to factory settings.  Also will I have to go out and update the OS or will the phone automatically do that.  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

What issues are you having that you think might need a factory reset?  The reason I'm asking is sometimes a system cache clear will take care of a lot of issues and it's less painful.    I'd remove the SD card before doing a factory reset and back up everything on the phone first.

I would have to ask the same question as tikibar1, what is causing you to perform a factory reset?
I typically like to back up my SD card just in case anything happens to my phone.
