Gmail will not sync over wireless if any background data restrictions are in place. This is true if you restrict a single application or restrict all data. And just to be clear, these are restrictions on the MOBILE data which are impacting the WIRELESS sync. Why can't I restrict background data without it screwing up the rest of my phone???

josemiths,
Help has arrived! Since the g-mail account sync requires data, and may require background data to sync appropriately, if disabled it will have an effect on this service. Once you enable the background data option, the sync will work normally.

This makes no sense. Why does restricting data on my MOBILE data have any effect on my WIRELESS connection? They should be two completely different connections, independent of one another.
Similarly, why does restricting data on a single application (e.g. facebook app) have any effect on gmail, a completely different app? I am not restricting background data on everything, just a specific app.
