How do I turn down the volume of notifications on my Droid Turbo?

I cannot adjust the volume OR turn off my notification sound!

The notification tone for individual applications can be changed within the individual application. You can change it from a tone to a "silent" tone if you prefer.

Volume cannot be adjusted via volume buttons nor the Sound setting within the phones main menu screen?
