How to import photos and videos from Moto Z Force to PC

Hello.  I am trying to clear space and backup items on my phone.  When I plug the USB into my laptop it tells me there is nothing to import from my Moto Z Force phone but there definitely is.  Any suggestions on what I am missing?

I have an XT 1650 if that helps

Have you pulled down the phone's notification shade and changed the USB mode to File Transfer?
