I am connected by USB cable but keep getting told I am not connected.

I can no longer see my XT1080 on my Window 8.1 desktop.  Also, when I try to sync with Documents to Go Desktop for Android I cannot do so.  Nor can I add the device because I am told I am not connected when I have the USB cable plugged in at both ends.What are the required settings for getting back to what I used to do?

bocabender do you have the ability to change the USB connection mode type on your phone when it is plugged in?  If the device is charging then you should see a USB icon at the top of your screen.  If you swipe down and select the USB icon you should be able to change the connection mode to Mass Storage.
