Issue after the update to my phone

It appears now after the update if I do not have my 4g data turned on I have problems sending and receiving text messages and sending and receiving phone calls.  When in 4g data mode it is blue and the phone bars are blue, once I turn data off the data bars grey out and this is when I have issues with calls and text messages.  There are time where I work I have to turn the data off or my battery is done by lunch time.  This is not acceptable as before the update I had no issues with text message or calls when 4g data was turned off.  I am not a happy camper and about ready to dump this phone and go elsewhere if it can not be fixed asap.
