Phone is Not Charging or is trying to charge?

My battery went completely dead. After over 5 hours on the charger I still can not get it to boot. When I plug it into the charger I sometimes get a white light notification that lasts about 3-4 seconds and the other times I get the motorola M and the the battery icon showing 0% and then the phone shuts back off. I have done some research on the issue and have not found a solution that works. Any help or advice would be really appreciated.
