Double billing

Verizon may have done it this time for me.  I paid a bill at the first of the month (May) for 581.00.  Three days later, they took it out again from my bank account.  It's so much easier for them to take money out, but when  you try to get it back, it takes an act of Congress to get anything out of these people.  i've talked to no less than five people already and no one seems to be able to help me.  I've had to fax them a statement from my bank that they indeed double charged me.  Why do I have to do that to begin with when they acknowledge over the phone that they did take the second payment out?  I have another week for  my new phone and the 200 dollars that I paid to get it.  I may have to return it just to get my money back so I'll have money to live off of waiting for my refund.  This is a bunch of crock!!!  You can't talk to the treasury department to find out the status and customer service, all they did is read from a script to tell you what the next line is.  I think I've had it.  If they can't resolve this thing, I'm going to be forced to go with another service provider.  Anyone know of a good one??

I worked for a large, midwestern banking institution for many years. They make debits easier because of the immediacy of the need, whereas the act of pulling the money back is, more or less, protection for businesses. The fact that they asked for a statement to show that it was debited tells me that it was an automated clearing house (ACH) payment, which can take some time to show up in the primary transactions and can take up to ten days before any institution is notified of a return. If it really was an ACH payment, then I suspect that there may have been some autopay setup that worked according to the specifics of their autopay service (I don't use it, myself) while you made a manual payment. Was I right, so far?

I don't have an automatic pay for my account.  I typically pay month to month as I don't like anything coming out automatically.  I go to the website and just pay when the bill is due which is at the first of the month.  I've done this for years and only had this problem a couple of times, but this time, they're acting like it's my fault that I got billed twice.  That's what was so odd to me that they wanted my bank statement showing the double withdrawal and in order for me to get my non-sufficient fund back, I also had to fax over showing where I was charged.

Good practice with not using autopay, in my opinion. With autopay, you lose the direct control over your money. It is common, however, for a business to ask for proof of double payment only because there is no other way to be sure that it is going to stay in there. I wouldn't assume that you are necessarily being blamed unless the words came directly out of their mouth. There is an idea regarding communication, which is the encoding and decoding of information and how it is delivered. Essentially, this is nothing more than to say that misunderstandings occur when the delivery or the reception are not accurately reflecting the message. I can remember a time where I was talking with a family member or friend about something and they "took it the wrong way" and blew up, believing that I was accusing them or faulting them for something, when I was not. In like manner, unless they specifically say it is your fault, I wouldn't read into it too much.

Have you checked with your bank itself? If you do not have autopay, are you sure that Verizon billed you again, or your bank made a double payment....

I paid in full last month and this months billing I get a notice that I had not paid last months even though I received a text message and email stating I was paid in full with NO PAST DUES.

This is not the first time but I am pretty sure it will be the last.

daddyattitude, we understand how alarming such notification can be. It's possible you paid after your bill generated. Have you logged in to your account or called #PMT to verify your balanced owed?
