voicemail asks for mailbox number

Why did my  iphone4 all the sudden ask for a mailbox number for voicemail?  If someone calls they get the same response.

Good question! I know that would concern me just the same. How long has this been going on? What happens if you dial *86? Any recent changes to the device? New applications or software updates?

I'm afraid not. The voicemail mailbox number is only used within the system to link to your phone number. We'd need to get your voicemail fully set up and connected properly. *Zaak
