I have a Galaxy A01 phone, and I'd like to add a new notification sound that I downloaded to the list. Alas, I can't paste it into the right folder. I know that I can always hook my phone up to my Linux computer and use root access to do it, but I'd like to know how it can be done using only the phone itself. Is there a way?

Is there not user accessible folders called "ringtones", "notifications, and" alarms" in the internal memory space? You don't need root access to modify those folders.

Yes, but even when I have the file I want copied, I can't paste it into that folder because paste is grayed out. If it weren't, I wouldn't need to ask here, would I?

There doesn't seem to be a folder anywhere, either in my Main Storage or on my SD Card that has the appropriate files. If anybody knows where it is, or how to find it, please let me know.

I found the folder: /Android/media/com.google.android.gm, and every file is in its own folder. Alas, creating a new folder and putting the sound file into it doesn't make it available, even after a reboot. Suggestions?

That looks like a system folder and not in the user accessible area. I don't have a Samsung phone to know how they are organizing the file system but I can show what the folder path would on a stock Pixel.
This image is from a file explorer app that has an option to look for duplicate files. It shows the folders where the duplicate files are stored. As I have duplicate ringtones stored in different folders, it shows those locations.

Thank you, but telling me where it is in a Pixel doesn't help me when I don't have one.

The location of the ringtone folder has basically been the same since Android 2.0 including across multiple manufacturers of Android phones. If you can't find it, you aren't looking in the right place.
I can't see your folder system. I don't have a Samsung phone currently, but I have used one in the past. Those ringtones I showed in the image have been transferred from a HTC DROID Eris, HTC Aria, HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One M7, Motorola DROID Turbo, Moto X 2013, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Moto X 2014, Pixel 1, and finally a Pixel 3a.

If I were adding a new ringtone, I wouldn't be asking here, because that folder's easily found and new files added there show up right away. I want to add a new Notification sound and replace the current one with it and don't understand why putting it in the right folder in the same way that other files are set doesn't make it available.

If you'll go back and read the first post in this thread, you'll see that I have a Galaxy A01 phone. Asked and answered.

I certainly did not want you to have to repeat yourself.. My system is not letting me go back that far in this thread. I would recommend contacting Samsung about this. The manufacturer will know all about what can and can't be done on their phone. Their number is 800-726-7864 or you can go to: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/contact. *Melissa

Why would I want to do that, after I've already accepted an answer as correct and have stated that everything's working just fine now?

If I wasn't clear before, that folder path you listed IS NOT the correct folder for saving your custom ringtones, notification tones, or alarm tones to make the custom tones selectable in the selection list.

No, it isn't the folder that custom ringtones are put in, it's the folder where all of the notification sounds are found, each in its own subfolder. As I'm trying to add a notification sound not a ringtone, putting the file in the ringtone folder would be a waste of time, wouldn't it.

The process for adding a custom notification tones is the exact same as adding a custom ringtone. The only difference is the name of the folder where the file is saved. As I noted previously and the instructions I linked previously provided indicated. The custom ringtones go in the "ringtones" folder. The custom notification tones go in the "notifications" folder, and the custom alarm tones go into the "alarms" folders. Look again at the image I posted earlier. There was one tone I had placed in all three custom tone folders. I did this so it could be available as a custom ringtone, a custom notification tone, and a custom alarm tone. It isn't my problem if you couldn't replace "ringtones" with "notifications" in applying the instructions before the link was provided.

Don't be so quick to take offense when none was offered. As I didn't know at first what folder to use, your instructions weren't as clear as they could have been. One thing that I learned in my many years doing tech support is that what's obvious to me may not be to the person needing help.
