I have tried using the LG Software update but the phone will not connect.

You don't want this update.  It is causing the phone battery to drop very quickly.

Verizon disabled the LG stock updater.  You can try to use the Verizon Software Repair assistant.  It should be installed on the phone and accessible when you plug the G4 into a PC.
