I have already updated the Messaging+ app and unchecked the auto-emoji option, but whenever I send or receive ":)" it comes back as an emoji. Can anyone assist me with this?

hstegall,
I apologize if the emoji function is not a setting you'd like enabled. In review of all features and settings for the Keyboards, it doesn't have one to disable them. Have you tried changing the Keyboard input completely?

Are you referring to the Swipe and Samsung Keyboard input options?

We want you to have the best option that is right for your needs! We were referring to the few different keyboards on by default like Swipe and Samsung Keyboard. There is also a variety of keyboard options also available through the Google Play Store.
Thank you,

I have used multiple keyboard inputs and applications however whenever I send or receive ":)" it's automatically converted into an emoji, despite whatever settings I have enabled or disabled.
Has anyone else been able to send/receive these smileys without then being converted on messages+? I know the Samsung loaded messaging app doesn't auto convert them to emojis but I would prefer to stick with Verizon's messaging.
Thank you! 🙂

Thanks for the insight. Have you attempted to disable smart emojis? This may be turned off through Verizon Messages, Menu ( top left hand corner) , Settings.

Yes, and even when the smart emojis aren't enabled they still appear when I
send or receive written out smileys.

hstegall,
It sounds like you are doing all the right things. This is definitely odd! Do the emoji show up only when you are using Verizon Messages? Do they still come up when using the stock text messaging app in the phone?

The emojis only appear when I use Verizon Messages. The stock text
messaging app doesn't auto convert the smileys, rather it leaves ":)" as it
appears both when I send or receive them.

I have the same problem. They don't stop even after disabling them in settings on my android phone.

I have the same problem. I prefer message+ over the app the comes with the phone, but I want to stop smily faces from converting I to emojis. I haven't figured out how to change it yet, if I even can.

This is an annoying problem but one I was able to solve. I don't know if this works for everyone but it worked on my Samsung Galaxy 5 with Verizon Messaging:
1) Go to Settings and actually ENABLE Smart Emojis
2) Then exit Settings
3) Then go back into Settings and disable them.
When I did this, then started a new message, Smart Emojis were disabled. Let's see how long it lasts. Verizon really seems to want us to use this dumb feature so it will probably be re-enabled next update.

It's not the keyboard and it's not emoji. When you type 🙂 or 😮 or 😛 these ASCII or utf8 characters are placed in the text message and transmitted correctly. The phone on the other end receives 🙂 etc verbatim. The problem is in the varizon messages display routine. These groups of characters are replaced by little bitmaps of smiley faces and this wonkey feature cannot be turned off. It is not related to emojis or emoji keyboards or smart emojis in any way. If you open the same text message in the stock text app the characters 🙂 are still there and are displayed as 🙂
PLEASE show this message to an actual programmer for the Verizon messages app. Just provide a way to turn off the non-emoji smilies. Did I mention that it's not emoji? Because it's not emoji. Repeat after me "It's not emoji"

Agreed. The smart emoji function works fine. It's the emoticons that are displayed wonky. If they would just give me a way to disable this feature, I would use this app. To be honest, it's a deal breaker for me. I use Textra instead.
