How do i change "preset contact" in my Moto G5 plus?

This question was asked before, but I've found the answer I thought would work doesn't.

So, with my old phone I had programmed the phone number (*86) with a pause then the voicemail password.  I got a new Moto G5 plus and magically it now only dials the *86 which is the "Verizon Wireless Preset".  Going to the phone app, pressing the 3 dots - settings - calls - Voicemail - Setup gets me to a Voicemail number change popup.  I've changed this to *86,password and saved.  Thought this would work, but it still calls the simple *86 number.

Anyone have a better idea?
