If I text a group that includes two iphones, I do not get any of the responses because for some reason their response is sent as an imessage. If I text only one of those iphones I get the responses without a problem.

Did you have an iPhone previously? Numbers with iMessage previously registered will be sent over iMessage instead of MMS or SMS. iMessage has to be turned off to correct this.
